ATTN: Consul General

17 September, 2001

Dear Colleague,

At this very sad time, may I pass onto all those who have lost family, friends, colleagues and fellow countrymen and women, the deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences of the members of the Society and the New York Consular Corps.

In an effort to aid the wonderful work of the New York City authorities, and to assist families who are affected both here and abroad, there are a number of things we can do.

1)                   The US State Department, together with the NYC Commission for the UN, Consular Corps and Protocol will be holding a meeting on Tuesday, September 18 at 10:00 a.m. at the UN Regal (Millennium) Hotel, 2 UN Plaza (at 44th Street and 1st Avenue) in the Grand Ballroom. ALL CONSULAR OFFICERS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND. The Commissioner Irene R. Halligan and Deputy Commissioner Bradford E. Billet will both be on hand for advice and assistance. It is hoped the meeting will answer concerns regarding foreign nationals and provide advice on how Consulates can assist the US State Department.

2)                   The NYC Commission for the UN, Consular Corps and Protocol are asking Consulates to provide, as soon as possible, lists of all foreign nationals known to be missing. It is requested that these lists (and regular updates) be e-mailed directly to: [email protected]
For general information, an office has been set up at the Mayor’s Emergency Operations Center by the NYCCUN and they are open from 8:00 a.m. through 12:00 a.m. and can be contacted on 1(646) 756 3043 or 1(646) 756 3044 or 1(646) 746 3046.

3)                   A Commission desk is also available at the Family Center located at Pier 94 from 0800-2000 each day. Phone inquiries can be made to the numbers listed above.

4)                   A register of volunteer interpreters is currently being established to aid local authorities with inquiries. If any member of your Consulate staff is able to act as an interpreter and is willing to be registered as a volunteer, and who may be called upon after usual business hours, please contact Elle Berdy, SOFC Secretary, (212-351 6516) with their name, contact details and languages spoken.

With my kindest regards,

Hon. Salvador Beltran del Rio

Consul General of Mexico

President, Society of Foreign Consuls in New York
